Skin Patch Successfully Reduces Peanut Allergy in Clinical Trial

According to The Wall Street Journal, up until 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended delaying children's first exposure to peanut products until as late as age 3, but a 2015 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that, not only does delaying exposure not actually help, early exposure can actually prevent allergies from developing in most children, according to The New York Times.

A new skin patch promises to protect kids with peanut allergies from deadly accidents.

Children aged 4 to 11 had the best response to the patch.

According to Dr. Daniel Rotrosen from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, training the immune system of the skin to tolerate small amounts of peanuts is how the therapy works.

The Viaskin Peanut patch hasn't been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

As shown, after 52 weeks, only 12% of the patients in the placebo group were able to swallow enough peanut protein to be declared a success. Another group received a patch with 250 micrograms, and the third a patch with no peanut extract (that served as a placebo).

"To avoid potentially life-threatening allergic reactions, people with peanut allergy must be vigilant about the foods they eat and the environments they enter, which can be very stressful", said NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. Majority have been mainly skin-related, where the patch has been applied. "So these are not kids who can go out and eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich". Respondents who were 12 years old and above did not experience as much of an effect.

The patch may also ease anxiety because it's not a shot like other allergy treatments. However, people with severe peanut allergies likely never will be able to consume peanuts by the handful.

"I think a lot of investigators and practitioners see these as potential tandem therapies - you start with one and transition to the other", said Greenhawt. However, the study did prove successful in participant retention: almost 97% of participants applied the patch every day, according to Jones.

Problems may occur if patients didn't use the patch as directed or if they forgot to put it on for a day. "Still, it's not something we'll run off to the store to get right away".
