Apple raising price of apps after sterling fall

The 25 percent increase in app prices along with other rises like the IAPs will be implemented on the App Store in the next coming days. It's not just £0.79 apps that are going up by 25 percent or more, either. Even, in terms of usage, calculated in terms of monthly active users both Facebook and Whatsapp maintained their top two positions respectively, while Google Maps was ranked number three.

The result of the increase will push the cost of apps up to £0.99 from £0.79-now nominally matching the $0.99 cost in the United States.

Downloads were roughly on the same path as a year ago, growing by 13 billion across the iOS App Store and Google Play to reach over 90 billion. However, Netflix beat YouTube in the USA and overseas for App Store revenue.

Similar changes are expected to roll out to Apple's digital iTunes and iBooks stores, according to The Guardian, which tipped similar hikes in countries like India and Turkey. China's App Store in particular saw dramatic growth in 2016, with activity expanding by 90 percent.

It is understood that the price rises will take effect within a week unless a specific app developer actively chooses to move to a lower pricing structure. India grew from more than 3.5 billion downloads in 2015 to more than 6 billion previous year.

The suit, originally filed in 2011, argues that since iOS users can't download apps anywhere other than the App Store, it is effectively a monopoly that runs afoul of antitrust rules.

Apple's top grossing apps for the past year include Monster Strike, Fantasy Westward, Clash Royale and Pokémon Go.

Of note, the App Store now offers 2.2 million apps - up more than 20%, year-over-year. For example, Finance, Travel, and Photo & Video apps did particularly well for the iOS App Store, whereas the Productivity, Tools, and Social categories proved popular on Google Play. Usage and downloads were so high that Black Friday became the first day to ever generate over $1 billion of US online mobile sales.

The top subscription apps for 2016 included Netflix, HBO Now, Line, Tinder and at Bat.
