Markus Nitschke, head of Windows at Microsoft Deutschland, pulled no punches when he stated that Windows 7 "can no longer keep up with the increased security requirements" of the mid-2010's.

And although it eventually retreated from an aggressive deadline, Microsoft plans to support neither Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 after July 2018 on devices powered by Intel's newest Skylake silicon.

All Microsoft needs now is focus on providing a healthy flow of features to Windows 10. Or it might be aiming for a faster adoption tempo to monetize Windows 10's software-as-a-service model as soon as possible. MSPoweruser reports that "The store of new e-books will be merged into the regular Windows Store alongside apps, games, music, TV shows, and movies". According to NetMarketShare, Windows 7 had an estimated market share of 48.3 percent in December 2016.
