Tesla Just Rolled Out its Autopilot Update to All HW2 Cars

Tesla's new Autopilot software is rolling out, but some owners might not be able to take advantage of it right away.

Last October, Tesla rolled out a more advanced hardware suite for its Autopilot semi-autonomous driving program. While there are still a number of Enhanced Autopilot features to be activated on Tesla's newer models, this update does a decent job of bringing them up to parity with what's available on the older models equipped with Autopilot hardware.

Data from the vehicle indicated that Joshua Brown, who was killed after his Tesla Model S collided with an 18-wheel tractor trailer that cut in front of him on a highway in Florida a year ago, took "no braking, steering or other actions to avoid the collision", according to the report. The Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) update addressed some of its concerns about Autopilot in its report, acknowledged NHTSA. However, the features included in the update is not active right away as it needs to be activated for the newer Tesla vehicle models.

Automakers typically let vehicles run for 3-5 years before implementing any major revisions, but that won't be the case for Tesla vehicles. Tesla will raise the speed limit on Autopilot, now 45 miles per hour, "as we get more data", said Musk, also revealing that the autonomous capabilities on Hardware 2 will improve every two to six weeks via over-the-air updates.

It works alongside the traffic-aware cruise control system (TACC) that is also being added with the over-the-air update.

Forward collision warning (FCW): A system that warns the driver of an imminent frontal collision with audible and visual warnings. Tesla has been preparing the software for months.

Tesla is a different kind of auto company from what consumers are used to.

Changes to functionality include a smarter "summon" feature that can allow the Tesla to drive itself down a curved section of road when the driver calls for it via a smartphone app, and an automatic lane change function that moves around slower traffic instead of just slowing down to sit behind it.
