After Thousands Protest Immigration Ban, Federal Judge Grants Stay To DetaineesBy Byron Manning Jan 31, 2017
A federal judge in NY has granted a nationwide stay of removal preventing the Trump administration from deporting refugees and others who had lawful authority to enter the United States. But the judge stopped short of letting them into the country or issuing a broader ruling on the constitutionality of Trump's actions.
Gee wrote that Vayeghan had a valid visa to be admitted to the U.S. According to ACLU, between 100 and 200 people have been detained on arrival at United States airports since Trump signed the order on Friday, a week after his inauguration, although the government has not confirmed those figures.
This comes after President Trump signed an executive order suspending entry of refugees to the United States for 120 days, barring Syrian refugees indefinitely, and blocking entry into the United States for 90 days for citizens of mostly Muslim countries, including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The stay also said that anyone with an approved refugee application could not be deported. And refugees on flights when the order was signed Friday found themselves detained upon arrival.
