Massachusetts Becomes the Second State to Sue Trump over Muslim Ban

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey made good on a promise to see President Donald Trump in court Tuesday, joining a federal lawsuit opposing an executive order that bars immigrants and refugees from seven predominately Muslim countries from entering the country.

Flanked by business leaders, education officials and directors from advocacy groups, the Democratic attorney general blasted Trump's immigration order as "harmful, discriminatory and unconstitutional", and announced that she'd join a federal lawsuit filed in Boston on Saturday against the measure.

The lawsuit was first filed Saturday by the ACLU of MA as well as private immigration lawyers, on behalf of two associate professors from the University of MA at Dartmouth who were detained at Boston Logan Airport.

MA is following the lead of Washington state, which said on Monday it would file a lawsuit in federal court challenging the ban on constitutional grounds.

"Our administration has worked with the Attorney General's office and supports her challenging this action", he said in a statement.

Meehan said the state's five-campus university system has 166 faculty and staff members and more than 300 students from the countries where travel is now prohibited under Trump's order. That ruling led some immigration lawyers to recommend that travelers coming from the seven countries listed in the executive order-Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, and Syria-take flights to Logan.

During Tuesday's news conference, which is scheduled for noon, Healey will be joined by UMass President Marty Meehan, Boston University President Robert Brown, Carol Rose, the president of the ACLU of MA, as well as immigrant advocates and representatives from health care and nonprofits, such as Oxfam.

"It discriminates on the basis of religion and national origin, denies our residents access to due process and equal protection ... and violates federal immigration law", Healey said.

"During his campaign, President Trump called for a quote complete shut-down of Muslims entering the United States".

Healey's action joins a federal case in the U.S. District of MA that lawyers took to court today to add more complainants. On Monday, Washington became the first state to file a legal challenge against the executive order. They were released after being detained for several hours.

"We will do everything we can to protect our faculty, our students, our scholars, our researchers", said Meehan. Information will be added once Massachusetts' complaint has been filed.
