Someone Wants Barack Obama To Run For President ... In France?

The Obama17 petition is now circulating with the aim of gathering 1 million signatures to convince the former USA president to run for office in France. The goal is to get 1 million people to sign the petition.

The website states the former president of the U.S. has the best experience in the world for the job.

The site hosting the petition claims that Obama "has the best resume in the world for the job" and that at a moment when France is appearing to swing to the far right, "we can still give a lesson of democracy to the planet by electing a French President, a foreigner". According to the site's organizers, some 27,000 people have signed the petition so far. "He's Barack Obama", one of the campaign organizers told CNN. "The funniest thing is when people first thing it's totally insane, but then ask themselves, 'Actually, why not?'".

Speaking to NPR, one of the creators of the website who preferred to remain under wraps, said,"We were thinking about French politics and saying that we were fed up with the fact that we all the time had to vote against someone", he says, "and how it would be cool to be able to vote for someone we admire". "We started talking about that and it came up that Obama is free - so why not hire him?" "It gives people a little fun amid all these scandals", he said. "The idea was to make people wake up". People are exhausted about it and they like this joke.

The french are set to elect the new president in April.
