European Union leaders confirms open, rules-based trade position

Donald Tusk, the former Polish premier re-elected as the chairman of European Union summits on Thursday, pledged to work with the Warsaw government that tried to prevent him from securing a second term and ensure Poland was not left isolated in the EU. Donald Tusk has done a good job.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, left, and European Council President Donald Tusk leave after addressing a media conference during an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, March 9, 2017.

"The (EU) is an organisation dominated by one country". But by Wednesday, diplomats from several member nations said it was clear that Warsaw has little or no support while Tusk has strong backing.

"The EU is dominated so extensively that the pressure on individual politicians is huge", he said, explaining the failed bid to oust the incumbent Tusk in favor of last-minute candidacy of Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, whose bid was formally submitted by Polish government earlier this week.

That hope fell away on Thursday when Mr Orban, arriving at the summit meeting, indicated he would not oppose the choice of Mr Tusk.

The leaders from 27 European Union member sates will meet again on Friday to prepare for the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, as British Prime Minister Theresa May, who is expected to trigger Article 50 to start Brexit talks later this month, will not attend.

The role of Solicitor General doesn't usually make too many headlines, but that's nearly certain to change in the next four years. Between 2003 and 2005, he served as deputy assistant attorney general in the US Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel.

MI women gear up for 'A Day Without a Woman'
She said "ladies, employ ladies; women have the opportunity to make this happen so that the imbalances can be balanced". And a number of New Yorkers plan to join in, via a sister event, a "Day Without a Woman".

"I don't see how one country could oppose this solution when all the others are in favor", said French President Francois Hollande, echoing comment from numerous bloc's 28 leaders. "I will do my best to make European Union better", Tusk said in a tweet. Merkel offered Tusk public support in a pre-summit speech to lawmakers in Berlin.

Earlier this week Beata Szydlo, Poland's prime minister, circulated an extraordinary letter to her fellow heads of government more or less accusing Mr Tusk of high treason. "The item is on the agenda, so I think that usually when an item is on the agenda one has to decide on that item", Muscat said.

On Thursday, Tusk was reelected as the president of the European Council despite Poland's determination to postpone the vote. And despite speculation that Hungary, which often allies with Poland against Brussels, might support the Polish gambit, Mr Tusk was re-elected by 27 votes to one.

Tossing diplomatic decorum aside, Poland's government brought the equivalent of a political blood feud to Europe's top table, much to the bewilderment and concern of Europe's leaders.

"Today it's about Poland, but soon you too can find yourself in this situation", Szydlo said.
