Elon Musk offers to fix Australian power network in 100 days

Repeated blackouts in South Australia since September past year have sparked a political row in the country.

On Thursday, Tesla executive Lyndon Rive had said the company could install 100-300 megawatt hours of battery storage in 100 days. So Elon Musk is treating his giant battery farm like it's a pizza, and promising 100 day delivery or it's free. You can see their replies in the tweet embedded below, and we think that their negotiations are serious.

In response, Cannon-Brookes called Musk a "legend" and asked for seven days to "sort out politics and funding".

Musk claimed the feat could be accomplished at a global cost of $250 per kilowatt hours for 100 megawatt systems.

It seems the process has already been started as Sarah Hanson-Young, Senator of South Australia and Jay Weatherill, Premier of the state reached out to Elon Musk.

In a series of Twitter exchanges from his official account in recent days, the Tesla TSLA, -0.49% founder offered the company's energy-storage technology and said he had spoken to lawmakers including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Previously, the island state does not have a massive grid as the mainland has to pull electricity from sources hundreds of miles away. He is also chairman of SolarCity (Swiss: SCTY.SW - news), a solar panel installer recently bought by Tesla.

Australia is the world's top market for rooftop solar, and South Australia uses more renewable power than anywhere in the country.

Rive said the required energy could be ready if the area did need it.

Mike Cannon-Brookes is the one that challenged Musk.

"Today I had a positive discussion with Elon Musk regarding his battery proposal", Mr Weatherill said.

The Tesla CEO took to Twitter on today (March 10) to offer the Australian state a solution to its worsening blackouts.

"Battery storage is something the South Australian Government would welcome and support". The problem wasn't so much total energy production; rather, it's the short period of time after everyone arrives home from work and kicks on the AC that has been causing blackouts.
