Kentucky Charter Schools Bill Headed To Governor's Desk

A similar bathroom bill in North Carolina was introduced in North Carolina, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says it's essential to protect public safety.

Testimony opened Wednesday on the House version of a bill meant to get Texas cities to crack down on undocumented immigrants. On Tuesday, the Texas Senate approved the state's bathroom bill, Senate Bill 6, which would restrict transgender people's access to bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity in some instances. The Senate version of the bill allows officers to ask about someone's immigration status id they are detained, which includes being pulled over for a traffic violation.

As she presented her bill Tuesday, Kolkhorst said the measure has been unfairly depicted in the media, and that she has been unjustly called a pawn in Patrick's scheme. The House has yet to consider the Senate's bill or offer amendments. They have their agenda; we have ours. "I will tell you, as a woman, this is not a joke".

"I find it just remarkable that we had a bill on the floor of the Senate today that treats them as vermin to be shot on sight and have no value whatsoever and here we want to treat them like pets", she said. President Donald Trump has since rescinded that order, but Republicans insist the measure is still needed.

Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who was the Texas chairman of Donald Trump's presidential campaign previous year, has put what he calls "The Texas Privacy Act" at the top of his agenda.

Senate Republicans frequently mentioned women's rights during the debate. While the bill contains no money for mental health services or programs, supporters say having the law in place will allow Kentucky to apply for federal mental health funds.

Strong winds swung the door open while Madison was still holding on to the handle and she flew with the door. The video was posted on Wednesday and it's been shared thousands of times and has over 600,000 views.

Sen. José Menéndez, D-San Antonio, said he believes the bill would increase the challenges transgender people face when using these facilities.

Democrats were also concerned about how the bill would affect transgender people. A rally from noon to 1 p.m. on the South Steps of the Capitol will feature Kolkhorst and Rafael Cruz, father of U.S. Sen.

More than 600 people had registered to testify on the bill at the hearing, with only about a dozen speaking in support of the proposed legislation.

The bill would prohibit the use of hand-held phones to "read, write or send an electronic message" while driving. It will now go to the full Senate for a vote.

Petrie, a freshman lawmaker who is vice chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and a practicing attorney, said the measure was a culmination of eight months of work spearheaded by state Sen. She also said, mistakenly, that a driver's license would reflect the birth certificate; this is not always the case, as there are separate procedures for each document.
