Theresa May rejects Nicola Sturgeon's call for new Scottish independence referendum

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed her plans to hold another Scottish independence referendum by spring 2019. London's conservative government has expressed reservations, but not officially responded to prior suggestions of a new vote by Sturgeon's pro-independence movement.

However most sources agree that Scots are losing confidence in the European Union. Last June, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, but Scots were firmly opposed, with 62 percent voting to remain. This has apparently pushed the SNP to pursue a compromise that they hope will please everyone.

"All of our efforts at compromise have been met with a brick wall of intransigence", Sturgeon said, claiming that May's government has been given every chance to compromise.

"If that road runs out and if we have to have that referendum, we will be turning our attention to making sure that we are making the case publicly, intellectually and in every other way so people understand the choice of a hard Tory Brexit Britain or a Scotland able to to maintain its relations with the rest of Europe".

Scottish voters rejected independence by 55 percent to 45 percent in a referendum in September 2014.

"The Tories are boxing themselves into a very unsafe corner".

"It is the belief of the Scottish Government that that can now only be done by allowing the Scottish people to make an informed choice as to the future they prefer". And there is no guarantee that the European Union would allow an independent Scotland to remain a member.

Therefore, she said she would ask the Scottish parliament next week to request a so-called Section 30 order from Westminster - a legal clause that would grant permission for Scotland to hold a new independence referendum. Even if she gets her independence vote and flips the result from last time, Scotland would not gain automatic admission into the EU.

Meanwhile, Alfonso Dastis, the Spanish foreign minister, has told Ms Sturgeon that Scotland would have to "join the back of the queue" if it wanted European Union membership, as Spain is opposed to the break up of the UK.

The Scottish parliament will vote next week on Ms Sturgeon's proposal.

So it feels as if May has turned a negative for the SNP - revisiting a battle that people didn't want to have - into a positive by blocking it.
