'He Ram': Politicians React to Yogi Adityanath Being Named UP CM

Putting an end to all speculations, the BJP named Yogi Adityanath as the next Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, while Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma has been appointed as the Deputy chief ministers of the state.

On Friday evening, the BJP leadership dispatched a communiqué asking its 312 MLAs to attend the legislature party meeting at the Lok Bhawan auditorium.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Naresh Agarwal said that he expects Yogi Adityanath to change his "fiery brand" image and work towards the betterment of the state.

The accession of Adityanath, the five-time MLA from Gorakhpur, can strengthen the BJP's "Hindutva" establishment in the state, but may provide enough fodder to the opposition to attack the saffron party on lines of "divisive politics".

Earlier today, Adityanath was summoned to Delhi on a special flight to meet Prime Minister Modi, but he returned to Lucknow without being able to meet the PM Modi.

Since the time Modi was chosen as the BJP prime ministerial candidate in July 2013 and the clear majority mandate which he got in May 2014, he had made development as his agenda and called himself as pradhan sewak.

Adityanath is a hardliner who is known for his unapologetic pro-Hindutva views, and has often been at the centre of controversies. The MP is also the founder of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, a right-wing group with significant popularity. His selection of Adityanath as chief minister of a communally sensitive state has, for once, created doubt in the minds of his supporters that Modi can't always withstand pressure from RSS and Sangh Parivar.

BJP's firebrand leader Adityanath, who was not even in the race until Friday, emerged as the lead contender.

Before announcing Adityanath as the CM, the party was set to give Union Minister Manoj Sinha the charge of UP, as per reports.

Both Sinha and Adityanath hail from Poorvanchal belt of Uttar Pradesh.

Adityanath also appealed his supporters to exercise restraint while celebrating his appointment as the chief minister. Hemostly remained confined to his constituency and was hardly seen in the campaign, although he is considered to be the senior most leader of the party in the state.
