The Next iPhone?

500x_iphone4_01.jpgSo, apparently, over the weekend, someone "found" the next generation iPhone in a bar in Redwood City, California. It was disguised in an iPhone 3G case.

We waited a while before we linked to this "news" because we were quite dubious of most of these so called rumors. But when John Gruber of Daring Fireball chimed in that he thought this story and the purported phone were the real deal, we decided to go ahead and link to it.

Whether or not this is the real deal, or a way for Apple to expose it's mole within the company, I'm still not sure. What I do know is that this purported next-generation iPhone looks pretty awesome.

It supposedly will include a front facing camera, better battery life, a better rear camera with flash if we are to believe that this is the next version of the iPhone. See the video below and read the entire story at Gizmodo.

Apple's Annual iPod Event - "It's Only Rock And Roll"

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2009, Apple is holding their media event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. The California-based company is expected to refresh their iPod lineup as they have done each year.  The most talked about new feature of the iPod is the inclusion of a video camera on the iPod nano and the iPod touch.

We will be watching Apple's announcements live and will be trying to followup with a summary of what was announced either later Wednesday or Thursday.

Matte Finish & Enhanced 3G in Next Generation iPhone?

If MacRumors.com is right, the next generation iPhone will have a matte finish and include enhanced 3G as part of it's new features to be unveiled sometime next month during the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC).  Additionally, if we are to believe other swirling rumors, it will also have a electronic compass, 32GB of storage and a radio...although I'm not exactly sure about it including a AM/FM tuner.

In any case, take these rumors with a grain of salt, it'll only be a matter of a few days before we know the truth...For yours truly, depending on how much of an upgrade it is, I may be waiting for the fourth generation iPhone...Hopefully Apple stuns us all once more and I'll have a new phone by July...

Next Gen iPhone Details...

From what seems to be a questionable post from a forum poster at a Chinese site, it seems that the 3rd generation iPhone may be a small upgrade. So far, the features unveiled are:

  • 600 Mhz CPU
  • 256 Mb Ram
  • Digital Compass & FM tuner
  • 3.2 MP Camera w/autofocus
  • 32 GB Flash Storage
  • No changes to physical size/casing
I'm not sure how much of this to believe as a few things make me doubt it's validity...however I could be wrong and this feature list could be entirely right. One of the things that doesn't sit well with me is the fact that it has a digital tuner and an autofocusing camera. Maybe not so much the fact that it has an autofocusing camera but Apple has NEVER included an FM tuner in ANY of it's iPod products...oh well, we'll see who's right in the next few months. Who knows, maybe i'm wrong...it has happened before.

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 Released & Blu-Ray in Next iTunes?

As June quickly approaches along with the hotly anticipated release of iPhone OS 3.0, Apple has issued another beta release...Yesterday, on schedule, Apple released iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 and although no new features have yet been uncovered, I'm almost certain in the next few days, the code hackers will discover anything of importance.

In other news, it seems that the latest version of iTunes, 8.2 beta, includes reference to Gracenote...that possibly points to recognizing the Blu-Ray format. We're not exactly sure what this means however we'll keep an eye on this and report if there are any new developments...

Apple Reportedly in Talks with Verizon Over 2010 iPhone

It seems with the ending of the Apple/AT&T contract imminent, Verizon and Apple have renewed talks on bringing the iPhone to the nation's largest network, according to sources at USA Today. And though very little details have been divulged, all signs point to a 2010 target release date at the earliest.

Things are heating up as I'm sure AT&T is not willing to let the iPhone get away so easily...In their most recent revenue filing (1st Q 2009), AT&T showed they have 1.6 million activations of the iPhone 3G and on top of that, 40% of those were new activations.

The battle of the networks is heating up and Apple's right in the middle...stay tuned for more information in the upcoming weeks...

AT&T Doubling 3G Download Speeds in Anticipation of Next iPhone

When the iPhone was originally introduced (both EDGE & 3G versions), AT&T had to work furiously to upgrade their network infrastructure to accommodate the upcoming iPhone. Now, reports are coming in much the same as before, this time stating that AT&T is trying to double their existing capacity so that the peak download speed is 7.2 Mbps instead of the current 3.6 Mbps.

In addition to doubling 3G speeds, AT&T is also looking into the looming 4G with HSPA_ that would allow speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps...There are rumors that AT&T may opt to forego the 14.4 Mbps speeds and go directly to speeds of 21 Mbps. However, competitors such as Verizon and Sprint are rapidly ramping up their 4G networks...

Exciting news for us, the customers in any case...

Next Gen iPhone Rumored to Have HD Video, AppleTV features

Some of the interesting news floating around the blogsphere is that the next iPhone will have the capacity to playback High Definition (HD) media. It makes sense that the next iPhone will support HD, however tipsters are also saying that there will even be HD video output...

The other tidbit of information is that the iPhone/iTouch will include some AppleTV-like functionality...we'll see if this comes true but if it does, it means you'll be able to watch streaming HD movies from your iTunes library directly on your iPhone/iTouch....very interesting and fun stuff for sure...

Anyway, none of this has been confirmed so take it with a grain of salt...we'll know all of the juicy details soon enough...stay tuned

iPhone Not Expected on Verizon Until at Least 2010

AT&T rival Verizon says that the earliest the iPhone could appear on their network is in 2010, along with the rollout of their 4G network. Industry insiders say that with the advent of the 4G network, it will be easier to manage a common, standard cellular communication technology.

Currently, there have been no official announcements, however, Verizon's Chief Executive Officer Ivan Seidenberg explained that Apple is "more likely" to want to work with Verizon with the wider distribution of 4G.

In any case, we'll keep an eye on this news and keep you updated as it happens.

AT&T Hopes to Extend iPhone Exclusivity Until 2011

Reports from the field suggest that in the U.S., AT&T is looking to maintain its exclusive carrier rights with Apple to be only iPhone distributor until at least 2011. Previously thought to expire in 2010, AT&T stands to lose some competitive ground over competitors Verizon and Sprint if the iPhone were available on other carriers.

The iPhone in its current form is not compatible with current Sprint, T-mobile and Verizon networks because the networks are not similar. Minor hardware adjustments would be necessary to allow the iPhone to operate on other networks.

We'll keep an eye on this and let you know when there are further developments.

Latest on the Next-Gen iPhone

digitimes.pngSeems like apparently Taiwan Semiconductor along with two of it's subsidiaries will be the major  manufacturer of the next generation iPhone. From digitimes, "TSMC have landed foundry orders for GSM EDGE power amplifiers, Bluetooth ICs and 3.2-megapixel OmniVision CMOS image sensor (CIS) used in the upcoming iPhone model, indicated the sources. Xintec will handle the packaging and testing service for the CIS whereas VisEra will manufacture on-chip color filters for the CIS."

We're not exactly sure how  accurate this information is, however, it is worth taking note of..the full article is here and shown to the right are the parts suppliers.

According to this article, the next-generation iPhone is scheduled to be released mid-2009.

Video Recording, Compass, Voice Control etc. Found in Beta Firmware

vidrecording.pngMacrumors is reporting that since the release of iPhone OS 3.0 beta, code hackers have been busy scourging configuration files to find what Apple might have planned for us in the next version of the iPhone.

Over the past few days there has been mention of the possibility of video uploading and editing but today an video recording interface seems to have been discovered.

Production Ramping up for Next Gen iPhone

iphone3rdgen.pngSwirling around the rumor mill this past weekend were reports that Apple has reportedly doubled its iPhone production for the launch of its new models which are slated to arrive in the June/July timeframe.

Some have speculated that the next iPhone might have video editing capabilities, while others are almost certain that there will be multiple versions of the phone.

Rumors Swirl Around iPhone OS 3.0 Feature Set

Wow, what a month it's been, so far a new iPod Shuffle, iTunes 8.1 and now mention of iPhone OS 3.0, amazing!

There are a lot of rumors going around as to what it will include and the agreement so far seems to be:

  • MMS (Multimedia messaging)
  • Tethering (using your phone as a mode)
  • Cut & Paste (whew)
That seems in line as to what users are asking for but other than that, even the experts (John Gruber of Daring Fireball) are sort of at a lost as to what to expect. I know this is a short announcement so far but, keep an eye on this column to see what more could be coming up for us. With the Palm Pre coming the competition is heating up! We'll definitely get a good picture next Tuesday at Apple's media event.

Apple & Adobe Collaborating on Flash & iPhone 2.1

Wow over the past few days there's been some exciting rumors floating around the internet. First off, ever since the iPhone OS 2.2.1 was released, people have been "hacking" the source to see if they could find anything...And sure enough what they did find was evidence of an iPhone 2.1 or basically a 3rd generation iPhone. We all know that these past two years, Apple has re-freshed the iphone in the June/July timeframe and I'm sure we'll be seeing another model this year. In any case, for more details, have a look at the source, PinchMedia.

Now as far as Flash coming to the iPhone...this is something that iPhoners have wanted since the beginning, I mean it's up there with Cut and Paste. Maybe the case was made that Flash either 1) drains too much battery or 2) isn't good enough for the mobile experience...BUT I feel that Flash isn't on the iPhone because it would actually compete with the iTunes app/games experience. In any case, it seems that now Apple and Adobe are "collaborating" on bringing Flash to the iPhone. Read the full story on Bloomberg.

Next iPhone OS Update?

Now that MacWorld's come and gone, the questions in a lot of users minds are: when is the next iPhone OS update going to be and what is it going to include. The answers to these two questions are very elusive as seemingly no information is available on them. At least for iPhone OS 2.2 there were rumors prior to it being available as to what it would include and when it would be released, but as far as this next release, anyone's guess is as good as the next.

In any case, I've heard that the release is coming out at the end of this month and will include:

  • Push Notification Services
  • More iChat features?
  • Themes
Truthfully I don't know about the last two but I am sure missing cut and paste and the ability for 3rd party applications to run in the background...We'll see what comes out and who's right. If the update doesn't come in January, I'm sure it'll come in early February.

Have you heard anything else? Any speculation on your part?

iPhone Rumors for MacWorld San Francisco

Seems like the real buzz besides an iPhone Nano announcement tomorrow is that Apple will be announcing some kind of tethering plan with AT&T. I hope that Apple and AT&T have worked out the details to offer tethering to their customers but I'm not sure I personally have a need for it. My aging laptop is a Powerbook 1Ghz G4 so it stays home most of the time but I am in the market for a new one this year...

In any case, yours truly is hoping for some kind of announcement on the next iPhone/iTouch upgrade...I'm really missing some features and if you've read my previous posts you'll know what I'm wishing for...I'm pretty sure they're not gonna happen, but a guy can wish can't he?

Anyway, we'll see how it all pans out in less than 9 hours..ttfn!

Case Manufacturer Vaja Also Predicting an iPhone Nano?

In what almost seems like a sure-fire indication that an iPhone Nano will be released at MacWorld in January 2009, well-respected case manufacturer Vaja has also made room for a iPhone Nano case.

Prior to seeing this, we felt that the chances of an iPhone Nano being released were slim, but now that Vaja has thrown the towel in the mix, we're a little more susceptible to believe an iPhone Nano might actually be released in January.

Follow the link for the screenshot of Vaja's iPhone Nano page...so far there's just a sign-up screen...

WalMart Rumored to Sell iPhones for $99

Earlier this year (October) the website The Boy Genius Report, reported that a tipster notified them that WalMart would be selling iPhones after Christmas and now making this rumor even juicier, is the fact that WalMart would be selling 4GB iPhones for only $99.

Keep posted for the latest news

New Features in iPhone OS 2.2 beta Revealed

While most iphone developers who have the latest iPhone beta OS are aware that Apple has made refinements to the interface of mobile safari, apparently there are features in the upcoming release that have snuck in under the radar.

Some of these examples include:

  • Turning off auto-correction
  • Inclusion of Google's street view in the Maps application
  • Inclusion of emoji support (a form of Japanese emoticon)
This editor is really happy that almost every major update has brought some kind of new functionality to my iPhone, but i'm still wondering where Push Notification Services and Cut-N-Paste is...

I know that in due time they'll be available, but I feel that once these can be addressed, they'll be one less barrier to a wider iPhone adoption.

iPhone OS 2.2 Beta Released to Developers

Hot on the heels of the recent iPhone OS 2.1 release, Apple is diligently working on the next upgrade to its mobile operating system. Screenshots comparing 2.1 with version 2.2 seem to be floating around the usual websites, however details are scarce. Here's what Safari in OS 2.2 is being reported to look like:

iphone2.2.jpg

Right off the bat, in the left screenshot, you'll notice that the refresh button has been moved into the url field AND that the search/magnifying glass icon has been replaced by the google search field on the right side of the url area.

Other than those obvious changes, we've heard rumors of cut and paste being included in this release, but nary a peep has been mentioned about Push Notification Services (PNS). I wonder where or when all these features are coming?

Home Pre-Qualification & 32GB iPhone for Xmas '08

Rumors around the web are saying that Apple will soon be offering a way for customers to "pre-qualify" themselves for a subsidized phone in the convenience of their homes. In the past, the pre-qualification checks would actually have to be performed in an Apple or AT&T store. We feel that this is a good thing as home pre-qualification check SHOULD speed up the currently tedious iPhone purchasing process....

In other news, there is speculation that Apple will be selling a 32GB iPhone model by this year's holiday season. This move makes sense as the iTouch's capacity is already is at 32GB of and would be a solid upgrade for this year's Thanksgiving and Christmas sales.

iPhone Software Update 2.1 Slated for Friday, Sept. 12

Well, Steve Jobs let the proverbial cat out of the bag when he announced that the iPhone would be getting a 2.1 upgrade to its operating system software this Friday. Only providing slight details on the update, he did mention that some of the changes include:

  • Better Battery Life
  • Fewer Dropped Calls
  • Various Bug Fixes
  • Faster Backups to iTunes
  • No App Crashes (although I hardly believe this one...i think it should be Less App Crashes)
Notably absent were background push notifications which were talked about earlier this year and slated for a September release. Needless to say, this update will be free for iPhone users.

iPhone 3G Tethering Being Considered by Apple?

If reports from Gizmodo are true, Apple and AT&T are in talks to offer a "data tethering" plan so that users will be able to pair their laptops with their iPhone 3Gs to surf the web.

Previously there was an application in the AppStore called NetShare that allowed this feature however it has since been pulled off the virtual AppStore shelves or so to say.

The only confirmation so far that this is in the works is a so-called email response from Apple CEO Steve Jobs to one frustrated user. The email goes as follows:

iPhone 3G Glitches to be Fixed with a Software Update

A story from Business Week says that Apple will soon be addressing a few issues of dropped iPhone 3G calls and surfing sessions with a software update which is soon to be coming down the pipeline.

Earlier this week, we traced some stories saying that the problems could be traced to a possibly faulty 3G chipset that Infineon makes, however the latest reports say that the fix is an easier one, one that Apple can make with a quick software update.

Apparently the dropped calls seem to be limited to only affecting heavily populated areas and only affect 2 - 3% of iPhone traffic. We'll be looking forward to a release by Apple that probably won't affect us too much as it seems our 3G network coverage here is pretty good...

Additional details from the Business Week story can be found here.

Apple's Blacklist, not a Apps Blacklist After All

There have been numerous reports about how Apple has hidden a remote blacklist that supposedly can remotely disable rogue iPhone apps previously distributed through the App Store. The discovery of this so called blacklist made by Jonathan Zdziarski has caused widespread controversy over whether or not Apple has your best interests in mind.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball puts an end to all the speculation over this supposed blacklist site and clears the air on what it actually is:

Apple has no reason to hide such a configuration in a sneaky place. If it's "tucked away in a configuration file deep inside" the Core Location framework, doesn't it seem more likely that this list has something to do with, say, Core Location? Even the URL of the file in question hints at this:

https://iphone-services.apple.com/clbl/unauthorizedApps

An informed source at Apple confirmed to me that the "clbl" in the URL stands for "Core Location Blacklist", and that it does just that. It is not a blacklist for disabling apps completely, but rather specifically for preventing any listed apps from accessing Core Location -- an API which, for obvious privacy reasons, is covered by very strict rules in the iPhone SDK guidelines.

So let's put this one to rest okay? Read more on Gruber's findings here.

800K iPhones? Apple and AT&T Partnership till 2010?

Various rumors from the field are reporting that FoxConn (one of the iPhone's manufacturers...) is now manufacturing approximately 800K iPhone 3G units per week...This is an amazing development, as the first generation iPhone sold about a total of 6 million unit. With this rate of sales, Apple is looking to achieve moving 40 million units by the end of the year. Just to give you an idea, the original estimate was to sell 25 million units.

In other news, it seems that someone at CNET has discovered that Apple and AT&T will remain partners till at least 2010. Originally thought to end in 2009, this new rumor pretty much puts the damper on TMo customers who may have been hoping to the iPhone 3G.

Well, what a strong start for this first week of August. We'll keep the news coming!

Reports of iPhone 3G Case Cracking Trickling In

Seems as if there have been a few reports from the field that some iPhone 3G units cases are developing hairline cracks on their "backs." So far, all the pictures I've seen show white 16GB iPhones, but it's unusual that a black iPhone with cracks hasn't shown up yet. We'll keep you posted on this as we think that this is very unusual and is only happening in a very few cases. Here's what the cracks reportedly look like:

iPhone 2.1 Beta Released to Developers & Hints of Cut & Paste Functionality

Reports from around the web, namely ArsTechnica and Wired are saying that iPhone software 2.1 has been released to registered developers. It seems that the update will bring a much requested feature, turn-by-turn directions. If this is true, it would be bad news for GPS makers such as Garmin and TomTom as the iPhone would be directly competing in their space.

Also, just a rumor...AppleInsider has reports that an iPhone developer has found the hints of cut and paste functionality within the iPhone SDK's Framework. The functionality resides in the "Localizable.strings" file in the "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit/framework." We'll be on the lookout for more information, so stay tuned and we'll bring you the news as it comes in.

iPhone Software 2.0 Update, 10 M AppStore Downloads

The iPhone 3G has only been generally available for sale for only four days and updates are coming fast and furious. Reports coming from the field say that iPhone software version 2.01 is in testing and will soon be released. This update addresses issues of performance, security and contains a few bug fixes. Look for the update to appear in iTunes in the near future.

One other thing we forgot to report yesterday is that the AppStore has seen over 10 million applications downloaded over the weekend since iPhone 3G launch. It is important to remember that these numbers do NOT indicate iPhone 3G sales as the previous generation iPhone and the iTouch are also able to download applications from the AppStore. The AppStore looks to be a big success and we'll be tracking it's progress as it gets bigger and bigger.

Speaking of the AppStore, here at the iPhoneNewsBlog, we want to try to start something called AppStore Pick of the Month. Each month, we'll try to pick out an application that we like and we will do a mini review on it. At the end of July, we hope to choose and review an application that we feel is heads and shoulders above the rest. Stay tuned for July results. WIth so many applications in the AppStore already, I can only imagine what the end of the month is going to look like...

Mysterious iPhone Firmware? 5A345 vs. 5A347

P7139966.JPGNot sure what to make of this but there seems to be two different versions of the iPhone v2.0 software floating around out there.

My wife and I stood in line on Friday and both got white 16GB iPhone 3G's. This evening I decided to restore my iPhone from my backup via iTunes. I thought this might remedy the crashing I had been having when using some third-party apps I downloaded from the App Store.

Apple Orders 50M more 8GB NAND Flash Chips

Samsung recently told its downstream customers it will have to reduce the amount of 8GB NAND flash chips available to them due to Apple buying approximately 50 million of the units to cover iPhone and iPod production through the rest of the year.

Earlier in June, Apple ordered 25 Million of these chips...Amazing, its just amazing when you think of all those iPhone and iPods that Apple will be making out of these chips...

This should come as good news to Apple shareholders and supporters alike...

iPhone 3G Stuff

With less than 12 days before the iPhone 3G arrives at Apple and AT&T stores all over the country, there is quite a bit of news coming from all over the place...First of all, it seems that the end of the month is the deadline for iPhone developers to get their apps in the AppStore on opening day of July 11.

Also, in other news, the iPhone is being brought to Australia via Telstra and in an even more surprising move, Telstra will be selling the iPhone for a whopping 0$. The only catch is that you would need to sign up for the $80 plan...Few details are being given regarding what that plan includes...

Meanwhile back in the states, AT&T is revving up their customer service, ads and distributing procedures to help the iPhone 3G launch day go smoothly be on the lookout for more activity as the days go by...

Updated: News from AppleInsider: It seems that on July 11, AT&T (POS) point of sales systems will need to have a special application that will "unbrick" iPhones during the activation process. What this means to us as consumers is that all iPhone 3Gs will need to be unboxed and activated when you buy them. This is completely different from when the iPhone was first introduced over a year ago, when both AT&T and Apple allowed in home activation. This move is seen as an attempt by both companies to limit the black market on iPhone 3G devices...More to come as we find it...

iPhone SDK Beta 8 & iTunes 7.7

News from the field point to iPhone SDK Beta 8 being released as the Golden Master for iPhone software update 2.0. "Golden Master" is the term software developers usually use to denote that the software has been QA tested and is ready for release to the public for general consumption. This news makes sense as the release of the iPhone 3g on July 11 is right around the corner and you'd want the developers to have a stable platform to code against. No news as to feature details have been revealed probably due to the NDA (non-disclosure agreement).

In other related news, iTunes 7.7 was also released to developers and this has brought interestingly enough the ability to turn an iPhone or an iTouch into a iTunes media remote. No mention of this has been made by his Steveness however, filings with the US patent office have shown the development of such a feature...

Anyhow, that's all for this week and we'll be back bright and early on Monday unless some breaking news happens over the weekend...TTFN!

Apple Increasing iPhone Orders to 15 Million

0ur friends over at AppleInsider are reporting that Apple has raised the amount of iPhones originally ordered to a staggering 15 Million. Also in their story, it was interesting to see that 2 million more first generation phones were being ordered.

Also talked about in the story was a steady increase in iPod, iTouch and Mac orders. Here's a direct link to the story.

iPhone 2.0 Golden Master - June 27th?

Happy Hump Day Everyone!

Our friends over at Gizmodo are reporting that their sources say that the iPhone 2.0 software could be declared as golden master by as early as this Friday. Golden Master is usually the last release before the software is distributed to vendors/manufacturers. In Apple's case, Golden Master means that the iPhone 3Gs software has been completed. This is good news for the upcoming July 11 launch.

In other news, iSuppli a market researcher has stated that the iPhone 3G costs only $173 to make. Keep in mind that these numbers do NOT include R & D and are just guesses until the actual units come out...

3rd Party Resellers to Sell iPhone in Europe

Reports have been cropping up lately pointing to the fact that in Europe, 3rd Party Resellers will be able to sell the iPhone 3G.

For example, in Germany, T-Mobile has reportedly signed a deal with computer reseller Gravis to help resell iPhones. Additional reports are further collaborating this story as similar arrangements are said to be made in Italy.

We'll keep you updated as the news comes.

Flash Reportedly Working on the iPhone

News from the field seems to point to the fact that Adobe has gotten Flash to run successfully on the iPhone emulator. While the iPhone emulator is where programs are supposed to be tested, we here at iPhoneNewsBlog feel that Flash on the iPhone could be a battery draining experience...In any case, counternotions.com has an additional theory as to why Flash is not yet on the iPhone..in a nutshell, it's all about the user experience...

Anyway, I've gotta get going so, have a great Wednesday and we'll see what the rest of the week has to bring us!

3G iPhone to use Evolved HSPA?

Reports from the field are pointing to the fact that the new iPhone will be able to tap into newly/soon to be available "Evolved HSPA." For those outside the industry, in a nutshell, this means that Apple's new device will be capable of downloading content at 42Mbps.

Why is this important you ask? Well, the general consensus in the rumor mill is that Apple is planning to add video conferencing ability to it's widely popular iPhone. Further supporting these rumors is the fact that Telstra executives are claiming that Australia will have the fastest iPhone in the world (by Dec. 2008)...further pointing to the fact that "Evolved HSPA" will in fact be used.

Exciting news indeed...16 more days to go!

Geo-tagging to be added to iPhone 2.0 software?

Insiders who are familiar with the software development process of the next generation 3G iPhone report that geo-tagging will be a much welcomed addition. Geo-tagging for those who are not familiar is the ability to add the location to the photo that was taken. For instance, if you take a photo at San Francisco, the iPhone will be able to add the coordinates of the photo in the meta data of the picture.

In any case, this is a feature most likely used by a lot of social networking mobile websites and is also a good feature for those of us who want to remember where a certain picture was taken.

More Confirmation of the 3G iPhone

We already know that its coming in June, now our friends over at AppleInsider and Gizmodo both report that the 3G iPhone will be launching for certain on June 9th, the same day at Steve Job's Keynote at the WorldWide Developers Conference.

In some other more surprising news it seems that the new iPhone will NOT follow Apple's fixed pricing model. In effect, if true, this means customers may be able to get the phone at a discounted price or as some other promotional offer.

Things are really heating up as we get nearer to the WWDC, personally, the next 30 days will be tough for me...

Intel Exec Mixed About Atom-Based iPhone Coming

Yesterday, Intel Germany chief Hannes Schwaderer let it slip that Apple will be releasing an Atom-based iPhone device in the near future. Then in an awkward move, he later denied saying anything of the sort and was instead referring to a general class of devices called Mobile Internet Devices (MID).

Well, all in due time my friend, all in due time...if however this rumor does turn out to be true, things might not be so rosy for our friend in Germany...I'm counting down the days...

Did AT&T Slip? iPhone Black Spotted on AT&Ts website

Anonymous tipsters have alerted staff at the iPhoneNewsBlog that a listing for a iPhone Black is now listed on its website. Strangely enough the slip is only shown when existing AT&T iPhone customers log in to their account and try to choose their iPhone.

The general consensus seems to be that instead of a chrome plated cover, the new iPhones will have a glossy black back. Its only a matter of time till we see what will really happen...Stay tuned for all the breaking news!

UK's O2 Preparing for 3G iPhone Launch

In what looks like preparation for the 3G iPhone launch, Apple iPhone partner in the UK has almost completely sold out of first generation iPhones an also has reached the 80% penetration point of being able to provide 3G services to about 80% of the UK.

The next few months are looking to be really exciting for those of you who have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of a 3G version of the iPhone.

Rumor: AT&T to Subsidize iPhone 2.0?

The latest rumor going around the Internet is that for the upcoming iPhone 2.0, AT&T is planning to subsidize some of the hardware costs. In other words, in an effort to increase market share and further its relationship with Apple, AT&T will be selling the iPhone for $199.

Please note that this is NOT a guess or prediction on my part, but rather just a summary of what i've read online...Remember, none of this is official and will probably never be verified...so, we'll just all have to till June...I for one, can't wait

Foxconn Electronics Selected to Manufacture 3G iPhone by June

Apple has reportedly ordered 24 - 25 million 2nd generation iPhone handsets from Foxconn according to the Chinese newspaper Commercial Times. Right off the bat, shipments of the 3G iPhone are expected to top three million units in June alone.

We expect to hear more details as we approach June. No word on how AT&T will handle customers who intend to upgrade their handsets.

Haptic Feedback for iPhone Planned?

The latest buzz around the internet is that Apple is looking to Immersion Corporation to license its haptic feedback technology. In a nutshell what this means is that Apple will probably be adding some kind of "vibrating" feedback to its upcoming iPhones. Other companies that are currently using this technology are Nintendo and Microsoft. Some of the iPhone's competitors already use this technology, but the latest ones to do so is Nokia's iPhone look alike, the Tube 5800.

In any case, this is good news as this blogger feels that haptic feedback will make an impressive product even better!

2nd Gen. iPhone Rumored Features

20080403iphoneback.png
Recently, rumors about the 2nd generation 3G iPhone has been flying fast and furious over the Internet. The most common consensus seems to center around the following featureset:

  • The back of the iPhone is a glossy black and the volume rocker is now chrome
  • A slightly thicker design
  • Inclusion of 3G and a real GPS
  • A Flush headset jack (so you can use "standard" headsets)
Other than that, everything else seems pretty much the same. All signs seems to point to a July release. We'll see...Keep your fingers crossed!

Economic Daily News says UMC has been Selected to produce chip for 3G iPhone

United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has been selected to produce Infineon Technoloiges' 3G baseband chip, which will be allegedly used in the new Apple iPhone that supports 3G, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

The baseband chip (PMB878) will be fabricated on UMC's 65nm process node. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) was the foundry partner for Infineon for the baseband chip used in the first-generation iPhone, the paper noted.

iPhone 2.0 predictions - What you can count on?

steve-jobs-holding-iphone.jpgOver the past few days, there have been a lot of rumors and predictions regarding Apple's forthcoming iPhone update. Being an Apple watcher for many years, I'd like to throw in my predictions that I think you'll be able to count on. Back in January, we had a list of predictions that were all pretty much on the nose. So we'll throw these out and see where they land.

What we know for sure (or we're pretty sure):

  • Apple iPhone 2.0 is coming SOON - Expect a End of June or July release. The latest we can see it coming out is August, but that would be a surprise.
  • Apple iPhone 2.0 will have 3G
  • Apple iPhone 2.0 will have GPS

iPhone SDK 3 Reveals 3G Chipset

According to Zibri (makers of the jailbreaking software ziphone), the recently released 3rd version of the iPhone beta SDK (software development kit) contains evidence that the next iPhone will be using S-GOLD3 chipset. The S-GOLD3 chipset includes support for:

  • HSDPA category 8 (7.2 Mbps)
  • Cameras of up to 5-megapixels
  • MPEG4/H.263 hardware acceleration
  • Video telephony, streaming, recording and playback

Other features of this chipset include: FM radio tuner/broadcasting, support for MMC cards and infrared capabilities,  however if the past is any indication, they will likely not be supported.

Like always, we will keep you updated as more information comes down the pipe. Stay tuned!

Amazing: Quake 3 Arena Ported to iPhone/iTouch

A seemingly believable video on YouTube shows that Quake 3 Arena has been ported to the iPhone/iTouch platforms. In this video below, you can see that the person is controller one player with his left hand and the other player with his right hand...multi-player? YUP

Anyway i guess for the rest of us, we need to wait a few months to see if this is real or not...I think it is and am very excited...And even if I personally don't play FPS, I think that something like this will be the killer app for the iPhone/iTouch and have the capability to take them to that next level! Enjoy!

WSJ's Mossberg Claims 3G iPhone to Debut in 60 days

Yesterday, while at an executive summit for Beet.tv, Wall Street Journal's technology columnist, Walt Mossberg said that a 3G iPhone would be released in about 60 days.

Normally, one might dismiss such a claim because many rumor and news sites have been reporting the possible imminent release of a 3G iPhone, however there may be more meat to his claim. If you recall the original iPhone's release, Mossberg somehow was able to get his hands on a device 2 weeks prior to other media and websites. Take it with a grain of salt, but who knows? We're crossing all of our fingers and toes here at iPNB.

3G iPhone Confirmed - AGAIN

This week at the CTIO Wireless conference, AT&T Mobility president and CEO Ralph de la Vega said that a 3G version of the iPhone will be arriving shortly. Yes, we know that in the past AT&T AND Steve Jobs both have said that the upgraded iPhone is in the works, but we felt that another confirmation would be reassuring...

De la Vega also went on to say that he expects the new iPhones to be available in May or June. Other worthy news of note was that he also said that they (AT&T) would be carrying phones running on Google's Android platform.

Hon Hai Selected to Produce Next Gen iPhone

According to anonymous sources, Hon Hai, one of Taiwan's largest contract electronics manufacturer, has won the bid to manufacture the next generation iPhone. There has been rampant speculation whether a 3G or a sub-$300 level iPhone will be introduced in the second half of 2008.

Some analysts are speculating that the new iPhone will be introduced in May and will help Apple reach its target goal of selling 10 million iPhones this year.

iPhone Update 2.0

An article at Hardmac.com reports that iPhone update 2.0 may be coming down the pipeline soon. A survey from Orange mobile(Apple's partner in the UK) reports that the following may be included with the 2.0 update:

-- Update 2 (this would be the correct name, not 1.1.4), will bring new features:
* Support for Flash, files with extension .Docx
* Adding a mini file manager
* Adding a "clipboard" to manage copied and pasted text, and send files to the clipboard via email or bluetooth
* iClips Management (is this the name of apps distributed via iTunes?)
* A more complete bluetooth manager
* iChat accessible only via wifi

-- But it would not bring:
* Management of MMS
* Video capture
* Editing of office files

As always, take this report with a grain of salt as it says the update is due in a matter of days...we'll see how things pan out.

Special Apple Event Rumors?

Our sister blog reported yesterday of rumors that an Apple Event will be held at the end of February. Fueling these rumors were statements from the band Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda wrote on the bands website:

"Looking forward to our first show at Madison Square Garden this week (sold out)!," he wrote. "Also, look forward to a special show that we're doing in NYC in conjunction with Apple...shh...it's a secret..."

Speculation has been running high as Apple has indeed done small, special press only events in the past. It would seem likely that they would do something special for the release of the iPhone SDK.

Anyone want to predict if this one will happen?

Something's in the Air... maybe MacBook Air?

What could possibly be in the air?

That's what signs are saying up at Macworld Expo going on today. Active readers in the Mac community did a little sleuthing over the weekend and found that the domain name "macbookair.com" as well as the .org, .us, .biz, and .net were all registered to a company living at 1 Infinite Loop... hmmmm.

What if there IS  a MacBook Air coming out tomorrow? What will it do? Perhaps a wireless feature to use the iPhone as a modem to get wireless signal anywhere? We'll just have to wait and see...

MacWorld 2008 predictions

So MacWorld is coming up next week. The iPhoneNewsBlog guys and gals all have a friendly wager going on regarding what will be presented as far as iPhone news is concerned. What will Steve Jobs pull out of his hat?

I'm hedging my bets on a few things to be introduced next week. Namely:
  • Upgraded iPhone v1.5. - more memory (16 gigs)
  • iPhone update 1.1.3
  • iPhone SDK
  • iTunes 7.6 with secure iPhone application installer
  • iPhone Software developer demos with new software available via iTunes
We'll see what pans out and what doesn't in a few days. Looking forward to it!

Will iPhone 1.1.3 firmware update break hacks again?

With news of the impending iPhone 1.1.3 firmware update arriving soon, the hacker community as well as those who have jailbroken their phones to install third-party software is up in arms.  It seems that the rumored version 1.1.3 update will once again break hacks that worked with the previous firmware according to people who have access to the new firmware.

Hacker "Natetrue", who also created the app "iBrickr", says that iPhone update version 1.1.3 disables both unlocks and third-party software. Most notably broken are any software that tries to unlock the iPhone such as AnySIM 1.2u, although iPhoneSIMFree and TurboSIM techniques have not been tried with the new firmware yet.

According to "Natetrue", Apple has patch a lot of vulnerabilities in the new firmware update. How did "Natetrue" get a copy of the firmware? Well it seems that it was leaked by someone in the inside who wanted to give hackers a head start on unlocking it.

We've been reading many comments on this story on other iPhone sites and think it's funny how so many people who have unlocked their iPhone or even jailbroken their iPhone are up in arms. Relax folks. If you like your jailbroken iPhone or your unlocked iPhone, we said it once before and we'll say it again... just don't upgrade to the latest firmware. Apple is doing what Apple should: protecting it's assets from vulnerabilities. If you don't like it, don't upgrade!

I for one haven't Jailbroken the iPhone since the first firmware update. Heres hoping for that new iPhone firmware 1.1.3 soon! What a way to start the new year!

iPhone 1.1.3 update imminent

Various rumor websites around the 'net have been reporting that iPhone update 1.1.3 is just around the corner. The origin of these stories seem to come from a site called GearLive which is not usually known for news such as this but the iPhone sites have nonetheless jumped on the bandwagon.

A lot of features that users have been requesting are now a part of the new update. For example, there are screenshots of the following new features:

- The ability to Edit Home Screen
- Dragging icons around with your finger
- Activation of "Locate Me" (pseudo-GPS) with Google Maps
- More screenshots of Locate Me
- Sending SMS to multiple people
- And finally, adding Safari Bookmarks to your Home Screen (example)

Right now, GearLive is taking a hammering (server wise), but the here's some links to the story and the gallery if you are able to get into the site.

Pretty exciting stuff if you ask me, This would be a great new year's present. I don't think I can wait for MacWorld.

Enjoy!

Update: Johnappleseed posted a gallery on his flickr site, it is way less congested than the GearLive site.

Breaking News: Jobs to unveil slimmer Macs and upgraded iPhone

steve-jobs.jpg
News and gossip this morning claims that Steve Jobs will unveil new slimmer Mac Portables and an upgraded iPhone.

According to a Bloomberg report it seems that the possibility of a slimmed down, ultra portable Mac will show up at MacWorld 2008 is pretty good. The report quotes a bunch of analyst for different firms with their takes on what will appear at MacWorld this coming year.

Analyst citing sources in Asia that supply Apple's assembly plants have said the sub-compact notebook will feature an 11-13" display.

Also on the list for an appearance: an "upgraded" iPhone with 16 gigabytes of memory is a high possibility. We think this is true. All you need to do is look at Apple's history when it comes to doing announcements and feature upgrades. It's quite rare that the upgrade doesn't come before the updated or new model. This will most likely hold true for the iPhone as well.

No one knows what else Steve might pull out of his Mac, but chances are, there'll be at least one more thing we're not expecting or aware of. New Apple TV? Music an Movie subscription service? Content deals? Who knows!

From all of us at iPhoneNewsBlog.com, Have a safe and Merry Christmas!

Unlocked iPhone - Is it real?

A new hack developed by some iPhone hacking forum members claims to have finally achieved "full unlock" for the iPhone. If it's true, this means the iPhone can be used by just about anyone in Europe. The hack is said to allow all of the basic functions of the iPhone cellular features including receiving calls, SMS messages, and EDGE data services. Visual Voicemail is not supported as it needs the protocols from AT&T in order to work.

Unlocking the iPhone to achieve "full unlock" is not for the faint at heart. You'll need a number of specific hardware and software. So these aren't necessarily things you can pick up at Radio Shack. A SIM reader/writer, a V1 SIM, a "SilverCard" smartcard (whatever that is) and you'll have to install Jailbreak.

We'll look deeper into this today.

iPhone Rumor Crazy

There are tons and tons of iPhone rumors out there and as usual, we always say take these rumors with a proverbial grain of salt. Don't get burned like some other folks did (well... we did too... sorta) see iPhone Rumors - Who can you Trust?

Here are a few around the net of interest if you want to speculate, some more plausible than others.

Apple may turn iPods, iPhones into wireless iTunes remotes

Apple working on dynamic lyrics display for iPods and iPhones

iPhone Nano - For Real?

Much to do about an iPhone Nano

UPDATE: JP Morgan has retracted Chang's assertions. See TUAW article here.

JP Morgan analyst Kevin Chang has everyone talking about a potential iPhone Nano. Kevin found a patent that was filed by Apple on November 1st, 2006 but was only published by the patent office on July 5. The patent involves a scroll wheel similar to the iPod and a "a user interface for controlling an electronic device, particularly a multifunctional electronic device that is capable of operating in multiple modes as for example a phone mode for communications and a media player mode for playing audio files, video files, and the like".

After Chen called around to suppliers, he concluded that Apple is planning an iPhone Nano, which would be cheaper than the current iPhone but with limited functionality but most of all, lacking the iPhones uber cool touch-screen. He predicts the product will launch in the 4th quarter of this year.

We're not sure if Apple would actually bring something out that soon. We really think Apple's next move is the 6th generation iPod with iPhone touch screen but no wireless phone and no WiFi. We also think Apple would sell this around October or November for the Christmas buying rush. YMMV.

Read more about this report that made Apple's stock jump here.

AT&T and Apple Stores to close at 4:30pm on June 29th?

We were wondering just how Apple and AT&T were going to do crowd control on the debut day of the iPhone. Surely they'd have a stampede on their hands if people were allowed to wait in the store to purchase one. Not to mention how it would probably be way too crowded for anyone to shop.

What we've been hearing is that Apple as well as AT&T will be closing shop at 4:30pm to clear out the store. They'll then begin prepping the new displays, then re-opening the stores at 6pm. This is the most likely scenario and will allow them to do business during the day.

We're not sure how people will reserve a space in line for this event but rest assured we'll be standing in a line somewhere to get our hands on one!

iPhone to REQUIRE AT&T data plan

We'll take this as a rumor since there is no confirmed source from the information we're getting.

Triston McIntyre claims he's been speaking to an "anonymous" AT&T store manager, and this manager claims:

"...visual voicemail, Google Maps, or any of the other main features will be available only through a contractual AT&T data plan."

We're not sure if we buy it or not, so we'll have to roll with this until someone says otherwise. If it's true, we'll be paying for a dataplan we'll hardly ever use since we're surrounded by wi-fi constantly during our work day.

If this is indeed the plan, then it would make sense that AT&T would try to milk iPhone customers over the 2 year plan since they can't make it on the hardware itself.

Leaked iPhone Sales Training Workbook gives info on iPhone

MacRumors posted a "leaked" copy of the AT&T iPhone Sales Training Workbook a couple of days ago.

We'll break it down for you here:

Just like we thought:
- Calls won't disconnect browsing if you're on a WLAN
- Auto address completion
- Music and Video pauses when user takes a call
- Smart error correction via keyboard when needed
- No IM client yet (iChat)
- Threaded SMS
- MMS is not supported
- No GPS
- Sync with iTunes

Unexpected
- All videos play in landscape mode

You can go over and take a look at the transcribed full listing here.

AT&T preparing Fine Edge for iPhone

The net is buzzing with the rumor that AT&T is updating their network to improve the quality of it's internet speed for the soon to be released iPhone.

The update is nicknamed "Operation Fine Edge" and it's been reported to have been in progress for the last several weeks. The plan is to optimize AT&T's EDGE mobile internet access for the iPhone, but in reality it will help any AT&T customer using the network. From what we've heard, AT&T are retuning many of their cell towers and even adding T1 network lines to circumvent network congestion.

All of this has a deadline of June 15, 2 weeks before the debut of the iPhone. Hopefully this will be enough to satiate the needs of all the iPhones that will be connecting to the net the day it comes out.

Apple to open iPhone to Developers

In an article by New York Times writer John Markoff, Apple is set to open the iPhone to developers at WWDC on June 15th.

"A person briefed on Apple’s plans said that at its software developer conference this month, Apple intends to announce that it will make it possible for developers of small programs written for the Macintosh to easily convert them to run on the iPhone."

What this probably boils down to is dashboard widgets and/or cocoa apps. If this turns out to be true, then everyone wins. Apple wins and so do we. Some of us here can't wait to start developing a few widgets for the iPhone that are specialized just for the rest of us.

Great news! Lets see if it's true!

iPhone Shipping with More than we thought?

Ah just what we like... more iPhone rumors!

A WordPress blogger posted this over the weekend. It talks about how the iPhone will be shipping with more features than we thought. Who is this vim3 guy and how does he know?

- iPhone will ship with more than 4 or 8 gigs of flash memory.
- There will indeed be a user replaceable battery in the iPhone.
- iPhone will support Wireless N.
- iPhone will ship with a mobile version of... iWorks. Word processing, spreadsheet and slide shows.
- iTunes will stream from a computer on your wi-fi network.
- You'll be able to purchase tunes directly from the iTunes store from the iPhone.
- AT&T will offer rebates on the iPhone.

We take it all with a large cube of salt and expect to be disappointed when none of it happens but... one can dream right? Believe at your own expense! We want to Believe!!!

Is there a 2nd Generation iPhone?

Reports from various readers are coming in regarding a "2nd generation" iPhone, even before the first on is out!

According to various sources online, it seems that the Taiwanese manufacturer Quanta has said it received an order fro 5 million iPhones which will be shipped in September. How people are getting a 2nd gen iPhone from this information is beyond us. This could simply mean they are ordering for the European market but we'll entertain the gossip of a 2nd generation iPhone (we highly doubt it though).

iPhone Unlimited plan coming to AT&T?

at-t-logo.jpg

Is it true? Will AT&T soon have an "Unlimited" package for iPhone users. It will be if Glenn Laurie, president of national distribution for AT&T has his way. Laurie has stated that an unlimited package is in the works, and that it makes sense to have this packages since the iPhone has so many rich features that use the internet.

This is what Lurie had to say about browsing the web:
“I think it will be great for us, and here’s why. One of the things with this device — people are going to be asked to have an unlimited package — people are going to have to have a package with us to browse.”

We're wondering how many iPhone users are gonna bite for this plan, seeing that the iPhone also has Wi-Fi built in... not to mention the high price of the iPhone!

Someones been using their iPhone to surf the web

The latest gossip across the web is that someone has an iPhone and has been "testing" it's web browser out. MacRumors said they found the iPhone browser identification tags in their apache server logs.

Here's what the iPhone supposedly reports itself as:
Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A538a Safari/419.3

They also claim that the requests originated from Apple's internal IP addresses. Now most things like browser identification strings can be spoofed but we're not sure if internal IP addresses can.

Real? Fake? We'll only know come late June so we'll take it all with a grain of salt but wouldn't put it behind Apple to start testing the darn thing to see if it works. I mean they should right?

Flash to be built into iPhone?

A Wall Street Journal article reports that Apple will be including Flash, Adobe/Macromedia's de facto standard media plug-in with the iPhone. It's not sure at this time whether or not Apple will be writing the plug-in themselves or if Adobe will be doing this since the iPhone is a closed platform.

iPhone Coming Soon - News starts to trickle in

AppleInsider has an article today that details tiny things about Apple Inc's (AAPL) iPhone that have been trickling in as it approaches its launch date.

The first is an AT&T email that shows some new buttons ont he Google Maps screenshot as well as branding change from Cingular to AT&T.

The second is the AT&T in store displays which we reported to you about last week.

The third is an iPhone open house at Apple's Elk Grove campus which was posted on Apple's Jobs site. The open house invites qualified telesales, iPhone Personal Trainers to join the iPhone team.

Lastly, there was a rumored AT&T memo about limiting vacation time from June 15 to July 15.

"The new AT&T has a multiyear, exclusive agreement to provide U.S. service for the iPhone," read the memo. "To ensure proper staffing during the product launch period, Sales personnel planning to take approved time off are encouraged to schedule their vacations before June 15 or after July 15 to participate in the iPhone launch."

The Rumored G-Phone really an iPhone Project?

For a few months now, many have speculated about the rumors that Google Inc. (GOOG) was working on an iPhone Killer but Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has once again stepped up to the plate to reveal what he thinks. Munster believes that Google will work with Apple (AAPL) instead of against it.

"We spoke with one person with knowledge of the situation, and believe the SideKick hires were 5 to 10 people, with a focus on software. We believe Google is building mobile applications for search and location that will work with the iPhone, and other mobile phones." Munster said.

This would seem to be jibe as Job's himself stated that Google and Apple were collaborating to bring Google tech to the iPhone.

Palm to be Sold by Thursday?

The word on the street is that "someone" is going to buy Palm, maybe as soon as Thursday. Possible suitors named are a few private firms, followed by bigger names like Motorola and Nokia. Who the buyer will be or even if the company will be sold remains to be seen.

Hidden Features in Steve Job's iPhone Keynote?

ACTV has "uncovered" a few things many have missed in Steve Job's Keynote on the iPhone.

Granted, the iPhone was still a prototype, and I think a lot of the software Steve demoed was as well. So take this with a grain of salt.

After watching the YouTube video here are the meat and potatos of the report in case you don't have time to watch it.

Calendar App
- calendar app has standard three views: year day month
- Steve had a screenshot of the month view with a day selected
- at the bottom are the days events
- add new events on the fly by pressing the + button at the top right

Mapping software
There was no directional information in the demo... or was there? In a different screen shot you could see these:
- lower right show and hide traffic info
- lower left enter directions or config?

Letter Scrolling
Pressing the letter on the right side of the screen and it will take you to the correct alphabetized listing.

And here's the big one:
Ringtones
iTunes has a separate tab for ringtones built in. Having a separate tab seems to make you think that Apple will allow you to sync and buy ringtones from the Apple iTunes store.
